Tenth Anniversary

January marks the beginning of our second decade. And that’s a shock. Not that
the group’s held together, but that the time has passed so quickly. You get into a
routine, suddenly ten years have gone by and you don’t even notice. It’s practically time
travel but without the grinding police boxes or giant glowing donuts. Just go to the
organizational meeting in 2000 and wake up in 2010. But there’s a lot between those
two points: 115 meetings, 189 books, 5 community relations managers, 3 store
managers, 2 stores, 2 moderators. Twice we’ve been fortunate enough to actually
discuss titles with the author, once in person (Dale Short, The Shining, Shining Path)
and once by phone (James Enge, Blood of Ambrose). We’ve gained and lost members
over the years, but kept a solid core who’ve been there from the start, from Ender’s
Game
to The Lathe of Heaven to 2010: Odyssey Two.

Now that we’ve reached the future, what’s next? And at hand, there’s the
aforementioned 2010 this month (check out this Space.com article on it) and Cherie Priest’s
Boneshaker
in February. We’ve got our 120th meeting in May and 200th title coming up
in November, a couple of milestones worth noting. Beyond that, with luck, another
decade at least as much fun, as rewarding to everyone, as the last.
